KimiSeek is an API platform, not an open-source AI project. We provide a single API for models; the model publisher controls its weights and licence. “Open-weight” does not automatically mean OSI open source, commercially unrestricted or safe for every use case.
Open-source AI vs open weights
The phrase “open-source AI” is often used loosely. The practical questions are: can you obtain the weights, what does the licence allow, and can you reproduce the system with available code and data?
What to check before choosing a model
Self-hosting vs API access
An API is usually the faster path for prototypes, unpredictable traffic and small teams. Self-hosting can be attractive at sustained high utilization or when data cannot leave your infrastructure, but the GPU and MLOps costs are often underestimated.
Access models through one compatible API
KimiSeek exposes an OpenAI-compatible endpoint at https://api.kimiseek.app/v1. Use one key, select the model in the request, and keep the same SDK code when moving between providers.
from openai import OpenAI
client = OpenAI(
api_key="ks-your-key",
base_url="https://api.kimiseek.app/v1",
)
response = client.chat.completions.create(
model="qwen3.7-plus",
messages=[{"role": "user", "content": "Hello"}],
)Which open-weight models are available?
Model availability and licensing change. The model catalog lists the current models, context limits and CNY pricing. Check each model page and the publisher’s licence before assuming that a model is open weights or suitable for commercial use.
Start with the catalog, then use the pricing page for exact input/output costs.
Frequently asked questions
Is KimiSeek an open-source AI project?
No. KimiSeek is an API platform. We provide access to models, including open-weight options where the model and provider license allow it. We do not claim to be the maintainer of those models.
Is open source AI the same as open weights?
No. Open weights means the trained parameters are published, but the license can still restrict commercial use, redistribution or derivative models. Open source usually refers to source code under an OSI-approved license. Check the model card and license before relying on either label.
Can I self-host an open-weight model instead?
Yes, when the license permits it. Self-hosting requires GPU capacity, inference serving, scaling, monitoring and model updates. An API is usually cheaper for prototypes and variable traffic; self-hosting can make sense at sustained high utilization or strict data-residency requirements.
Are Chinese open-weight models available through KimiSeek?
Availability changes as providers release models. Check the model catalog and each model page for the current model identifier, pricing and limits. Open-weight status and license terms must be verified with the model publisher.
